Renovation of Original Mary Fletcher Hospital Building Wins Historic Preservation Award

BURLINGTON, VT – Fletcher Allen Health Care announced today that the Chittenden County Historical Society awarded its 2006 Preservation Award, in the Public Building/Institution Category, to the team responsible for the renovation of the Mary Fletcher Building.

The Mary Fletcher Building, on the Medical Center Campus of Fletcher Allen, was the original site of the Mary Fletcher Hospital, which opened to the public in January 1879.  The renovation of the building was designed to restore the look of the Mary Fletcher Building as close as possible to its appearance when it first opened to patients.

Among the key aspects of the project were the reconstruction of a rooftop belvedere with metal weathervane, repair of the building’s foundation, the reconstruction of ten five-foot chimneys, brick cleaning and restoration, and window replacement.  Crews also reconstructed the covered entryway in front of the Mary Fletcher Building.

Stewart Construction of Essex Junction was the contractor for the project, and Burlington-based Freeman French Freeman served as the local architectural firm.  Among the subcontractors on the project were: Architectural Interior Products of Williston; Conant Custom Brass of Burlington; historic preservation consultant Liz Pritchett Associates of Montpelier; masonry subcontractor Liszt Historical Restoration of Hinesburg; Pella Windows and Doors of Williston; and Marshfield’s Michael Schumacher, who created the building’s new weathervane.

An official re-dedication of the Mary Fletcher Building is planned for this October.
