Fletcher Allen Holds Free Gynecologic Cancer Conference

Educational Program Planned for Saturday, September 10th

BURLINGTON, VT – The Division of Gynecologic Oncology at Fletcher Allen Health Care is presenting “Gynecologic Cancers: Screening, Treatment, and Nutrition,” Saturday, September 10, 2005, from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Sheraton Hotel and Conference Center in South Burlington.

Despite major advances made in the screening, diagnosis, and treatment of gynecologic cancers, there are still many misconceptions regarding these potentially treatable conditions.  According to the American Cancer Society, more than 22,000 American women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer this year, and approximately 10,000 cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed.  The conference is designed to better inform the public about all gynecologic cancers from the perspective of some of the area’s most respected health care providers.

Among the presentations that will be offered are:

  • “Prevention of Cervical and Ovarian Cancer”, by Cheung Wong, M.D., director of Gynecologic Oncology at Fletcher Allen;
  • “Genetic Testing for Ovarian Cancer,” by Emmanuel Soultanakis, M.D.;
  • “Update in the Treatment of Gynecologic Oncology,” by Mary M. Zumsteg Mangan, R.N.; and
  • “Women’s Nutrition,” by Fletcher Allen Clinical Nutritionist Alyssa Consigli, R.D.

“Gynecologic Cancers: Screening, Treatment, and Nutrition” is free and open to the public, and continental breakfast is provided.  The event is sponsored by the Eleanor B. Daniels Fund and GlaxoSmithKline.

For more information and to reserve a space for the event, please call (802) 847-5110.
