Web Tutorial

Web iconThe Internet can be a really fun place, full of useful and interesting information. It can also be a confusing tangle of addresses (called URLs) and unfamiliar commands and instructions.

In order to make your web experience more productive, we've provided links to a couple of basic tutorials below.  Also, we've outlined some of the basic tools and keyboard shortcuts to help guide you through the web.

As you are navigating our site, keep in mind that there are two places that you can go if you get stuck and need navigating help.  First, look for the web icon as pictured at the top of this page. There is one located toward the bottom of every page on this site. Clicking with your mouse on that icon will bring you back to this page so that you can check the information provided here, or you can go to one of the tutorials listed.  The second place you can go for assistance is the "Help" menu listed at the top of your browser window. You can check the keyword index for any topics you need help with and then follow the instructions as outlined.

Links and Images

When looking at the pages, you will note that some of the text is written in green and underlined.  Clicking on any of this green underlined text will bring you to a new page within the site, or it will bring you to another web site. These are called Hypertext links
and are a unique and helpful tool for navigating from site to site on the Web.

You will note that once you have clicked on a text link, the color of the text changes.  This acts as a visual reminder to you that you have already used that link.

Also on several of the pages, you will find small pictures called images or icons. Some web sites even use original artwork or photographs as images.  Often times, these images are also used as links. You can locate links by moving your mouse cursor over text or images.  If the mouse cursor changes from an arrow pointer to a pointing finger, then you have found a link and you can click on it to follow its path.

Toolbar Buttons

After following a link, if you want to return to the previous page that you were viewing, simply click on the "Back" button at the top of your browser window.

Other buttons on the toolbar that you may find helpful:

Home -- returns you to your browser's default Home Page. This will not return you to the home page of the site you are trying to view.

Reload -- Fixes scrambled Web Pages or pages that did not load completely.

Print -- Prints the content area of the current Web Page.

Search -- Provides you with several search engine options so that you can locate sites of interest.

Stop -- Halts the transfer of Web pages. This is helpful if pages are loading too slowly  and you want to move on rather than waiting for a page to fully load.

Keyboard Actions

Space bar/Page down -- Advances the Web page by one screen at a time. You can also use your mouse and the scroll bar located on the right side of your browser window.

Backspace or Delete/Page Up -- Goes back one screen at a time.

Home -- goes to the first screen of the Web page. This is not the same as the Home button on the Toolbar!

End -- goes to the last screen of the Web page.

Navigation tools unique to this site:

We've added several items to make our site easy to find your way around.

All the images on our pages have an ALT tag -  when you move your cursor over the image, a yellow box will appear telling you what that image is. This is helpful when images don't load properly or you stop loading the page to save time.

Whenever possible, we have included links for web pages to all resources listed on our pages.  For your convenience, we've also included "Mailto:" links that will automatically give you an E-mail composition window to send e-mail directly to our resources.  We've  also included their E-mail address in writing if you'd rather contact them later.

Also at the bottom of each resource guide page, you will find four contact links as follows:
