 Important Information

Welcome to Emergency Services at Fletcher Allen Health Care. Emergency Services at Fletcher Allen encompasses so much more than the classic "ER". We are an integrated team providing episodic, urgent or emergent care to our service area which includes all of Vermont and parts of New York and New Hampshire serving nearly 1 million people.

Fletcher Allen Health Care is a 500-bed tertiary-care hospital that is the major teaching hospital of the University of Vermont College of Medicine. Fletcher Allen is a Level One Trauma Center, the highest level of certification provided by the American College of Surgeons for hospitals providing trauma care for adults and pediatric patients.

The centerpiece of Emergency Services is the new 45-bed Emergency Department at the Medical Center Campus at Fletcher Allen.  Our new doors opened in July of 2005 as a state of the art facility which has expanded areas for trauma and acute patients and those needing general medical care.  Here the team provides expert emergency care to over 54,000 adult and pediatric patients annually, 24 hours a day.

Board certified Emergency physicians oversee patient care, along with the treatment team that consists of physician assistants, resident physicians in training, medical students, emergency nurses and emergency medical technicians and licensed nursing assistants. The attending physicians are also members of the teaching faculty of the University of Vermont College of Medicine.   Expert consultation is readily available in virtually all medical specialties.

Emergency nursing provides the backbone of the team in the Emergency Department. Many of the nurses are specially trained.  Assisting them are: licensed nursing assistants, emergency medical technicians, paramedics and clerical staff. Together, the team strives to provide the finest in compassionate emergency care.  Nursing educational opportunities included the recent  Emergency Nurse Internship Pilot Program in the Emergency Department.

Patient care is the primary mission of the Fletcher Allen Health Care. As an academic health center in alliance with the University of Vermont College of Medicine, the institution is committed to medical education and research. The Emergency Department actively supports these activities with an Emergency Medicine clerkship for medical students and regular clinical rotations for resident physicians. The Emergency Department actively participates in precepting nursing students for clinical rotations in the Emergency Department setting, including University of Vermont, Norwich University and Vermont Technical College.  In 2005 we began a nursing internship program that helps new graduate nurses and nurses who have no experience working in an emergency department become skilled in this highly variable setting.  The Emergency Department is also a teaching ground for all levels of emergency medical technicians from across Vermont.  The Emergency Department is dedicated to ongoing research projects in the institution and has produced and published original research of its own.

Fletcher Allen Coordinated Transport (FACT) is Fletcher Allen Health Care's critical care transport service. Specially equipped and staffed ambulances respond to referral hospitals throughout Vermont, Northern New York, New Hampshire and occasionally more distant locations bringing both adult and pediatric patients back to Fletcher Allen.  The Emergency Department physicians at Fletcher Allen provide medical direction for the adult patients transported by the FACT team.  Pediatric intensive care physicians provide the medical direction for FACT's pediatric transfers.

As you can see, emergency services at Fletcher Allen Health Care are designed to respond to a comprehensive range of needs. These services are an integral part of Vermont's academic health center, one of the few such centers in northern New England, providing advanced-level care to the region.
