Qualifications for Admission

The Child and Adolescent Training Program at the VCCYF seeks to recruit and train compassionate, personable, and scientifically minded individuals who are motivated to achieve excellence in their professional endeavors as leaders in child psychiatry practice, research, and teaching. We look for high levels of professional and ethical standards, academic performance, analytical abilities, clinical and communication skills, personal maturity, and a commitment to life long learning. We eschew dogmatism, arrogance, and complacency. Previous experience and skills in research and research methods including previous publications and scientific presentations is desired but not required for otherwise excellent applicants.

How to Apply for PGY1 Positions in the Child Track

There are two residents each year who come into the University of Vermont General Psychiatry Residency in the Integrated General/Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Program and are automatically accepted into the Child and Adolescent Training program as a PGY4. Interested students should review the requirement for admission for the UVM Psychiatry Residency which accepts applications only from ERAS (Electronic Residents Application Service).

How to Apply for PGY4 Positions

Currently, there are openings for residents to apply during their PGY3 year for entry into the program as a PGY4. However, we cannot accept applications from PGY4 residents who wish to begin child and adolescent training as a PGY5.

All residents considering admission to this program need to participate in the NRMP Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Specialty Match. Prior to starting this program, all residents will need to have completed an internship and at least two years of a general psychiatry residency program.

The following components are required to complete an application:

  • University of Vermont Child and Adolescent Psychiatry Application Form

  • A letter of evaluation from the training director of your adult residency program that includes a summary of performance

  • (If internship was separate from adult residency) A letter from the internship training director verifying at least four months of internal medicine, family medicine, or pediatrics and two month (full-time equivalent) of neurology (at least one of which is adult neurology). This is required for Board eligibility.

  • Transcript of medical school grades

  • Letter of recommendation from medical school dean

  • Two additional letters of recommendation from individuals who can knowledgably comment on your qualifications

  • A brief autobiographical statement and statement of career goals (no more than 500 words)

  • A curriculum vitae

  • Verification of Training Form completed and signed by the general residency training director that indicates successful completion of all requirements of general psychiatry

Application Procedures

For PGY4 applicants, completed applications will be carefully screened by the Training Director. Invitations for in-person interview will be made to highly qualified applicants once applications are reviewed by the Residency Training Committee which consists of both faculty and residents. Applicants can check with the Residency Coordinator by calling (802) 847-7817 to check on the completion status of their application. Interviews will last a full day and will be scheduled during the Fall.

Applications for PGY1s residents in the 5 year child track will be reviewed jointly by the general psychiatry and child psychiatry Residency Training Committees. Interviews will be scheduled for those applicants meeting interview criteria for both training programs. The interview day will consist of meeting with residents and faculty in both the General Psychiatry and Child and Adolescent Psychiatry programs.

Additional information about planning an interview visit here can be found at the Graduate Medical Education website for the University of Vermont and Fletcher Allen Health Care.

Accepted Residents

Residents who have been accepted for a position through the NRMP will need to apply for a Vermont Medical License and DEA number (after the license is obtained). Applicants are strongly encouraged to begin this process as soon as possible. Those residents who already have a full Vermont medical license should submit a copy of it with their application.
