Ongoing Research Projects
Inadequate Prehospital Ventilation in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Increases In-Hospital Mortality
Retrospective chart review of patients with severe traumatic brain injury (GCS<8). This study shows that for non-intubated patients, abnormal partial pressure of carbon dioxide on presentation after severe head trauma is correlated with increased in-hospital mortality. Preliminary results of this were presented at NENS in 2006.
Prediction of Vasospasm Following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage
A retrospective study with data from years 1999-2007. A mathematical model created to predict the occurance of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm in patients based on admission risk factors and clinical factors during the first three days post-ictus. Potential applications include identification of patients at highest risk who would benefit from increased screening or prophylaxis for cerebral vasospasm.
Characterization of Surgical Corridor in Odontoidectomy
A cadaveric skull base study. Optical localization techniques are applied to compare surgical corridors for transnasal and transoral surgery for odontoidectomy.
Seizure prophylaxis with Levetiracetam for Tumor Craniotomy: A Randomized Trial
The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of levetiracetam compared with phenytoin for perioperative seizure prophylaxis in patients undergoing craniotomy for brain tumor. This trial is currently in the developmental process.
