Ongoing Research Projects

Inadequate Prehospital Ventilation in Severe Traumatic Brain Injury Increases In-Hospital Mortality

Retrospective chart review of patients with severe traumatic brain injury (GCS<8). This study shows that for non-intubated patients, abnormal partial pressure of carbon dioxide on presentation after severe head trauma is correlated with increased in-hospital mortality.  Preliminary results of this were presented at NENS in 2006.

Prediction of Vasospasm Following Subarachnoid Hemorrhage

A retrospective study with data from years 1999-2007.  A mathematical model created to predict the occurance of symptomatic cerebral vasospasm in patients based on admission risk factors and clinical factors during the first three days post-ictus.  Potential applications include identification of patients at highest risk who would benefit from increased screening or prophylaxis for cerebral vasospasm.

Characterization of Surgical Corridor in Odontoidectomy

A cadaveric skull base study.  Optical localization techniques are applied to compare surgical corridors for transnasal and transoral surgery for odontoidectomy.

Seizure prophylaxis with Levetiracetam for Tumor Craniotomy: A Randomized Trial

The aim of this study is to determine the efficacy of levetiracetam compared with phenytoin for perioperative seizure prophylaxis in patients undergoing craniotomy for brain tumor. This trial is currently in the developmental process.

Past Research Projects

Research assistant in neurobiology/biophysics Fall 2000 – Spring 2001

for James Groome, Ph.D. at Harvey Mudd College

      • Employed patch-clamp technique to study sodium ion channel properties of an inherited muscular disorder

      • Thesis project completed as part of a larger study funded by the Muscular Dystrophy Association

Research assistant in mathematics Fall 2000 - Spring 2001

for Mario Martelli, Ph.D. at Claremont McKenna College

      • Awarded best project at two meetings of the American Mathematical Association
      • Created a unique function that demonstrates the properties of the Sarkovskii theorem, a specific ordering involving periodic orbits of continuous functions

Research assistant in neurophysiology Spring - Summer 2000

for Newton Copp Ph.D. at Keck Science Center at the Claremont Colleges

      • Researched serotonin-containing neurons in crayfish and a turning reflex initiated by those neurons
