Welcome to the information page for the Neurological Surgery Residency Program at University of Vermont/Fletcher Allen Health Care.

The University of Vermont residency program in neurological surgery is approved by the Council on Graduate Medical Education of the AMA and the American Board of Neurological Surgery.  Our Division of Neurosurgery receives routine and complex referrals from Vermont and upstate New York serving a population base of nearly 1 million people.  One residency position is filled each year and we use the ERAS matching service.  Residency training includes 6 clinical years and a year of basic research training.  Residents are encouraged to explore clinical and basic research opportunities at the university and hospital throughout their residency training.

Program Curriculum:

PGY1 - General Surgery Resident – 6 months; Neuroscience – 6 months
PGY2 – Junior Neurosurgical Resident
PGY3 – Basic Research Laboratory Resident
PGY4 – Elective – 6 months; Neurosurgery Resident – 6 months
PGY5 – Maine Medical Center Neurosurgery Resident
PGY6 – Senior Neurosurgery Resident

We pride ourselves on the one-on-one interaction between resident and attending.  Our residents are exposed to a varied and broad surgical experiences including subspecialties which prepare the residents for a career in general or academic neurological surgery.  Subspecialty areas of training include training in areas such as cerebrovascular surgery, spinal surgery, tumor surgery, peripheral surgery and pediatric neurosurgery.  Multidisciplinary conferences are conducted weekly with Neurologists, Neuropathologists, Neuroradiologists and Oncologists.  Our university facilities include an active cerebrovascular laboratory and a fully equipped skull base dissection lab.

All recent program graduates have completed postgraduate fellowship training, including functional, pediatric, skull base and spine neurosurgery.  Many of our recent graduates have entered full-time academic neurosurgery.
