Rotations

The first year resident manages problems generated from the Emergency Room and participates closely with the attending staff in the daily office practice of otolaryngology. He or she performs nearly all of the entry level surgical procedures.

During the following year, a formal six-month research rotation tailored to the resident's interests precedes para-oto-laryngologic rotations of 2 1/2 months of oral surgery, one month of ophthalmology, one month of radiation oncology, two weeks of allergy, and one month at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, Basic Science Course.

The second year resident is responsible for seeing all hospital consultations and evaluating them with the designated attending staff. Otolaryngologic surgery of an intermediate level of sophistication is routinely performed, with more advanced otologic, oncologic, and cosmetic procedures evolving as experience proceeds throughout the year.

The third year of otolaryngology is spent at the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire with senior level responsibilities. The experience parallels the subsequent chief residency year at FAHC, and provides exposure to an excellent complement attendings with broad clinical strengths. Surgical experiences cover the full complement of major specialty procedures with special emphasis on microvascular free flap and reconstructive surgery.

The fourth year resident coordinates all administrative functions and performs all major head and neck and sophisticated otologic surgery with the attending staff. During this year the resident becomes facile with outpatient ultrasound and endocrine surgery of the head and neck.
