Education
The University Invasive Cardiology faculty offer the only ACGME accredited interventional cardiology fellowship training program in Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont. Two training positions are available each year under the direction of 5 Interventional Cardiology faculty members.
After successful completion of training fellows are eligible for Board Certification in Interventional Cardiology. The Fletcher Allen Health Care interventional cardiology fellowship training program is notable for its exposure of fellows to a high volumes of coronary interventions as well as to novel devices (atherectomy, thrombectomy, distal embolic protection, stenting, and brachytherapy) and peripheral vascular interventions.
As an essential component of the University general cardiology fellowship, two general cardiology fellows participate in cardiac catherization each month and receive intensive training in all aspects of invasive cardiology, including hemodynamic assessment, coronary angiography, image interpretation and assessment of complex cases.
A highlight of the University Invasive Cardiology education is a weekly Catheterization Conference that is attended by all interventional cardiology faculty and fellows. This one hour conference is structured to review quality assurance, joint cases with cardiac surgery, hemodynamic assessment, angiography and selected journal references on a rotating basis. In addition, visiting faculty who are thought leaders in interventional cardiology provide lectures on a quarterly basis. All American Board of Internal Medicine Specialty Board content that pertains to interventional cardiology and invasive cardiology is discussed in the course of each year at this conference.
The University Invasive Cardiology faculty also an annual overview of new developments in interventional cardiology- the New England Cardiac Catheterization Conference (N-E-C-C) This meeting is held in Stowe, Vermont during the first weekend of October and is led by the UVM Invasive Cardiology faculty in conjunction with thought leaders from across the nation. The conference is co-sponsored by the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Interventions and is ideally suited for catheterization laboratory staff, fellows and invasive cardiologists throughout the New England region.
