The Gastroenterology and Hepatology (GI) Unit provides outstanding clinical care in all aspects of digestive disease. We are the largest group of specialists in the region that spans Vermont and northeastern New York. The Gastroenterology Clinic has a rich legacy of excellence in the management of inflammatory bowl disease and in disorders of the liver. In the past decade, we have built upon this legacy and have developed additional innovative clinical programs in therapeutic endoscopy, gut motility, and gastrointestinal cancer.
The Endoscopy Center and Digestive Diseases Center at Fletcher Allen Health Care, the teaching hospital of the University of Vermont, was completed in late 2006, and these facilities are state-of-the-art. The 10,000 square foot Endoscopy Center is equipped with 8 fully functional endoscopy suites linked by a computerized reporting system. Each year, over 6,000 outpatient procedures are performed by Gastroenterology Unit faculty providers. In addition to standard endoscopies, these procedures include motility studies, capsule endoscopies, percutaneous biopsies. endoscopic ultrasound, endoscopic mucosal resection, photodynamic therapy, and complex pancreaticobiliary endoscopies.
The Digestive Disease Center is an interdisciplinary outpatient facility in which Gastroenterology physicians work in close alliance with gastrointestinal surgeons. Here, approximately 2,000 new referrals are seen by GI providers each year. The close collegial relationships with experts in Diagnostic and Interventional Radiology, GI surgery, Pathology, and the Vermont Cancer Center facilitate a comprehensive one-stop approach to patient care. |
