The Nephrology Unit is the primary provider of care for most patients with renal diseases in Vermont and for many patients in upstate New York. The unit provides renal replacement therapies for patients with end-stage renal disease including hemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis and continuous renal replacement therapies in the intensive care unit. The unit has an experienced staff committed to training patients for a variety of home dialysis therapies. In conjunction with the Department of Surgery, the Nephrology Unit provides support for kidney transplantation and for kidney/pancreas transplantation. In addition to patients with primary renal diseases, Fletcher Allen Health Care serves as a referral base for patients with complicated hypertension. Faculty provide both inpatient and outpatient consultation, and the unit is nationally recognized for its expertise in the management of acid-base and electrolyte disorders, diabetic nephropathy, hypertension, and acute renal failure.
