Combined Clinical Fellowship in Orbital and Ophthalmic Plastic Surgery
and Neuro-Ophthalmology 

Preceptors:             David A. Weinberg, MD, FACS (fellowship director)(ophthalmic
                                          plastic surgery and neuro-ophthalmology)
                                    Hilary E. Fazzone, MD (neuro-ophthalmology)  

Duration of fellowship - 1 year (usually July 7 through June 6) 

Requirements for acceptance into fellowship:

  • Successful completion of an ACGME-accredited residency in ophthalmology
  • Must be board-eligible or board-certified
  • 3 letters of recommendation, including one from the residency program director
  • Vermont and New Hampshire medical licenses


Schedule

Typical daily schedule (subject to change):           

Monday

Clinic all day (8AM-5PM)

Tuesday

Clinic all day (8AM-5PM)
(7:30AM Ophthalmology Grand Rounds - one Tues per month)

Wednesday

1st, 2nd, & 4th - OR all day (7:30AM-5PM)
3rd - 7:30-8:30AM Neuro-Ophthalmology Rounds with Neurology Residents
3rd & 5th - Clinic, operating room, or academic and administrative time                    

Thursday

2nd Thursday - OR at Alice Peck Day Hospital, Lebanon, NH
3rd Thursday - Patient Clinic in Lebanon, NH
1st and 4th Thursday - 8:30AM Neuroradiology or Neuropathology conference
9:30AM Neuroscience Grand Rounds
10:30 AM Clinic or academic/administrative time
Noon - OR (Moh's reconstructions and other surgery)

Friday

(7:30AM Ophthalmology Problem Case Conference- one Fri per month)
Fellow Clinic- Clinic all day (8:30AM-4:00PM)

N.B. Additional OR days are frequently added on.

Responsibilities

  1. To stay up-to-date on topics in neuro-ophthalmology and orbital, lacrimal and eyelid diseases and surgery in the major ophthalmology journals (Ophthalmology, Archives of Ophthalmology, American Journal of Ophthalmology) and related subspecialty journals (Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Journal of Neuro-Ophthalmology).
  2. Complete extensive reading list from textbooks on ophthalmic plastic surgery and neuro-ophthalmology (will be provided at start of fellowship year).
  3. Attendance at monthly ophthalmology grand rounds and problem case conferences, neuroradiology rounds, and neuroscience grand rounds is expected.
  4. Present at least one ophthalmology grand rounds lecture (on any topic in oculoplastics or neuro-ophthalmology)
  5. Participate in the monthly neuro-ophthalmology lecture series to the neurology residents
  6. Submit at least one manuscript to a peer-reviewed journal during the fellowship year
  7. The fellow is encouraged to complete a neuro-ophthalmology or ophthalmic plastic surgery thesis and submit it for publication by the end of the fellowship.
    General ophthalmology on-call will be shared with other members of the ophthalmology division 
  8. No moonlighting is permitted. 

Stipend- $32,500 per year (plus $1500 to attend a national conference) 

Benefits

  1. 2 weeks paid vacation or interviewing time
  2. 1 week off for one of the following national conferences- AAO/ASOPRS, ARVO or NANOS
  3. Medical malpractice insurance is provided (including tail coverage), as well as health insurance for the fellow and immediate family. 

Faculty Appointment - The fellow will function as a junior attending in the Division of Ophthalmology at Fletcher Allen Health Care.
