GRAND ROUNDS

MEDICAL STUDENT EDUCATION

The Department of Psychiatry plays several key roles in medical student education at the University of Vermont.  Our current primary responsibilities and activities are as follows:

  1. Neural Science course:  This course was designed to bring together the subject matter from our former Introduction to Psychopathology course with other areas of neuroscience. Its first offering, during the Spring semester of 2004, was highly successful, and it continues to be a highly rated first-year course.
  2. Psychiatry Clerkship: We are part of a 15-week clerkship block, consisting of the clerkships in Psychiatry, Neurology, and Inpatient Internal Medicine.  Students spend a total of six weeks on Psychiatry, three weeks on Neurology, and six weeks on Inpatient Medicine.  Each student rotating in Psychiatry spends three weeks on an inpatient unit located at either Fletcher Allen Health Care or Vermont State Hospital.  During the remaining three weeks, students rotate on either the Psychiatry Consultation Service or the Crisis Service of Chittenden County.  They also spend half-days in two outpatient clinics.  Students participate in weekly case discussion seminars on topics taught by the psychiatric faculty.  There are on-line teaching modules and Powerpoint presentations to review in advance of these case presentations.   In addition, four whole-day learning experiences on important topics that span the three disciplines occur during the 15-week clerkship block.
  3. Advanced Integration rotations: During the last fourteen months of medical school, students may choose rotations in inpatient psychiatry (acting internship), consultation psychiatry, emergency psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, outpatient psychiatry, and/or psychiatric research.

Other medical student education activities in which members of our department are involved include the new and innovative Bridge Curriculum, the Introduction to Clinical Decision Making course, the Generations course, the Medical Student Leadership Groups, and individual student advising and mentoring.  Finally, several psychiatry faculty members have been and continue to be very active in the process of designing and implementing the new Vermont Integrated Curriculum. This is an exciting time at the University of Vermont College of Medicine, and the Department of Psychiatry occupies a vital, high profile position with respect to current and future medical student education.

PSYCHOLOGY EDUCATION

At Fletcher Allen, the Department of Psychological Services, directed by Marlene Maron, provides training to graduate students, interns, and postgraduate fellows in psychology.  Supervision and didactic training is provided by licensed doctoral level clinical psychologists.  Training is offered in the areas of medical psychology/behavioral medicine, rehabilitation psychology, general clinical, and pediatric psychology.  Medical students and residents in psychiatry and pediatrics may have opportunities to rotate through medical services served by the Department of Psychological Services.

Psychology training is also provided in the Department of Psychiatry at the Center for Children Youth and Families and at UVM in the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences.
