Special Psychiatry Grand Rounds

The College of Medicine is pleased to host Dr. Werner Ceusters, Director of the Ontology Research Group at the New York State Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics and Life Sciences in Buffalo.  He is a Professor of Psychiatry and the Coordinator of Bioinformatics at the School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, SUNY at Buffalo.

Dr. Ceusters will present a special Grand Rounds entitled, Advancing Translational Research in Psychiatry through Realism-based Ontology.

The presentation will be held at the

General Clinical Research Center Conference Room, Baird 794, on August 15 at 10:45 a.m.

Dr. Ceuster is a candidate for a faculty informaticist position at the University of Vermont, as part of the Center for Translational Research.  His field of ontology examines the way in which entities and processes are conceptualized, then represented by terminology and naming conventions in information systems.   This study of the way in which reality is conceptualized has enormous implications for the integration of ever-expanding information, including the functioning of electronic health records.   In his own words, we must be “secure in the knowledge that the same terms will… represent the same entities on all occasions of use.”

The presentation is open to all faculty and students at the University of Vermont, as well as to the participants in the Department of Psychiatry Grand Rounds Series.
