The UVM Department of Psychiatry's full-time faculty of thirty-two includes twenty-one psychiatrists, ten Ph.D. psychologists, and one masters level family therapist complemented by a clinical faculty of 60 other mental health professionals. Faculty members teach, conduct research, and provide clinical care in a variety of settings as listed below.  The Department is an active collaborator with a number of other health systems, including the Vermont Department of Mental Health, and a variety of community-based services in mental health and substance abuse.

Inpatient Psychiatry

The psychiatry service at the Medical Center Campus is the principal inpatient facility for Vermont as well as for neighboring northeastern New York. This extensive catchment area ensures the referral of patients with a wide variety of clinical problems. The full spectrum of diagnostic and treatment procedures is provided to patients by multi-disciplinary treatment teams consisting of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, a physician's assistant, social workers, activities therapists, and trainees. Trainees become proficient in general psychiatry as well as in more specialized diagnostic and treatment interventions such as electroconvulsive therapy.  There are two general fifteen-bed units, one locked the other open.  Inpatient referrals can be made at 802-847-5069.

Partial Hospitalization

Seneca Center is a psychiatric partial-hospitalization program offering services more intensive than an outpatient clinic's, yet less restrictive than inpatient hospitalization. Seneca Center uses cognitive behavioral therapy, focused primarily in a group setting. For more information or to make a referral, please call 802-847-3333.

Substance Abuse

The Department of Psychiatry, in collaboration with the internationally known Behavioral Psychopharmacology Unit, Day One (an intensive outpatient substance abuse treatment center) and Maple Leaf Farm (a residential treatment facility) provide state-of-the-art perspective for the assessment and treatment of substance abuse disorders.  Additional sites have included community agencies, Medical Center Campus outpatient programs, and the departmental NIDA-funded Substance Abuse Research and Treatment Center.  For more information, please call Day One at 802-847-3333 or Maple Leaf Farm at 802-899-2911.  Information is also available regarding our Human Behavioral Pharmacology Lab at www.uvm.edu/~hbpl

Psychiatric Consultation Service

The Psychiatric Consultation Service (PCS) is an active inpatient service providing nearly all of the psychiatric consultations at the Medical Center Campus. The consultation service is staffed by three attendings, a psychiatric social worker and a resident assisted by medical students.  This service can be reached for inpatient consultations only at 802-847-4727.

Adult Outpatient Department

The Adult Outpatient Department offers a structured and comprehensive assessment for patients suffering from a broad range of mental disorders or psychological symptoms.  A treatment plan is developed collaboratively with our patients, and information is provided so that patients may make informed choices about the available options.  When necessary, referrals are arranged to specialized facilities or resources.

There are four clinics within the outpatient department.  The Adult Psychopharmacology Clinic offers general psychiatric assessment, consultation, and treatment-- especially  for conditions that may require pharmacotherapy.  Complicated medication problems are referred to the clinic from throughout northern New England and upstate New York.  The Geriatric Clinic is integrated with the FAHC Memory Center and the Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit, providing assessment and treatment of elders from a wide geographic region.  The Psychotherapy Clinic offers individual, group, and family or couples therapy to patients in the Burlington area.  In addition, psychotherapists offer treatment in family practice settings under the Primary Care Behavioral Health Program.  The Mind Body Medicine Clinic (MBMC) specializes in the management of chronic pain, bereavement and trauma issues. MBMC offers two 12-week group therapy programs: Management of Chronic Pain and Bereavement & Depression Program.

For more information about outpatient services, please call 802-847-4560.

Crisis Services

The Crisis Services of Chittenden County help in the crisis assessment of patients and families, in immediate diagnosis and disposition of acutely psychotic and suicidal patients, in utilization of community resources, in liaison with Emergency Services staff, and in forensic psychiatry. They provide consultation to health professionals from the local community mental health center.  For more information, please call 802-658-0400.  For Crisis Services, please call 802-863-2400.

The Center for Children, Youth and Families

The Center for Children, Youth and Families provides diagnosis, management, and treatment of psychiatric disorders in children and families. The Pediatric Psychopharmacology Clinic combines the internationally known empirically based Taxonomy (CBCL) with the DSM-IV approach. Expert developmental assessment and diagnostic skills are combined with pediatric psychopharmacology and the manual based psychotherapies for the treatment of childhood and adolescent psychopathology. This includes an active outpatient clinic, psychological testing, family and child psychotherapy supervision, and a wide range of consultations to various community agencies and schools. If you would like more information or would like to make a referral, please call 802-847-4064.  The research program is internationally known for its development of the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL, TRF and YSR.) Numerous epidemiological treatment and genetic studies are currently underway in the center.  You can find the Child Behavioral Checklist as well as other ASEBA forms and information at www.aseba.org/index.html
