Heart Surgery
For more than 50 years, the heart care team at Fletcher Allen Health Care has been providing people with a second chance to do what’s important to them. In alliance with the University of Vermont, Fletcher Allen is Vermont’s academic medical center and one of only 125 such centers in the country. Our academic affiliation allows us to provide the best patient care possible by bringing research and education to the bedside. The Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Fletcher Allen Health Care is a multi-disciplinary group dedicated to the evaluation and treatment of diseases involving the heart and thorax, the area of the body between the neck and the diaphragm. This physician group provides the most current therapies to treat diseases of the heart and chest. In 2005 these physicians performed 513 heart surgery procedures, including 342 coronary artery bypass graft procedures (CABG). In addition to providing patient care and participating in the education of tomorrow’s health care providers, the division is a founding member of The Northern New England Cardiovascular Disease Study Group (NNECDSG), a pioneering consortium dedicated to improving patient outcomes in heart surgery through research. Please go to the Heart Surgery category within the Research Results section to see an outline of the work of NNECDSG, and to see how Fletcher Allen compares with the NNECDSG research group results.
