Diagnostic Radiology

X-ray imaging is used in the diagnosing and treatment of many conditions. An x-ray is produced using a small amount of radiation. The image produced is called a radiograph. Your doctor will order an
x-ray examination, which depending on the exam requested, may need to be scheduled by your physician.

Before Your Exam

Some exams may require special dietary preparations, which will be explained when they are scheduled. Please remember to carefully follow any special instructions you may have received.

During Your Exam

The technologist will explain the exam to you. If you know, or believe, you are pregnant, you will need to inform the technologist before the exam. In order to achieve the best possible examination results, the technologist will be giving you specific instructions regarding breathing and body positioning.

After Your Exam

The radiographs will be viewed by a radiologist (a physician who specializes in diagnostic imaging). The results of your exam will be sent to your referring physician.

About Fluoroscopy

Fluoroscopy is a special examination using x-ray techniques of the Gastrointestinal tract. Your physician’s office will schedule a fluoroscopic examination for you by calling the MSU Department of Radiology.

Before Your Exam

Your exam will require special dietary instructions, which will be explained to you when your appointment is scheduled. Please remember to carefully follow all special instructions you receive.

It is important to inform the technologist:

  • If you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant
  • If you are diabetic
  • If you have special food or medication needs during the time of your exam

During Your Exam

A technologist will explain how the exam will be performed and answer any questions you may have concerning your scheduled procedure. To assist in achieving the best possible examination results, the technologist will give you specific instruction regarding positioning your body during the exam. Also, breathing techniques, which assure that optimal imaging is achieved, will be discussed.

After Your Exam

Your exam will be viewed by a radiologist (a physician who specializes in diagnostic imaging). The results of your exam will be sent to your referring physician.
