New Features Help Patients Relax

Our new High Field Open MRI comes with the "Ambient Experience" - featuring soothing, thematic audio-visual surroundings.

Before entering the room, patients can select from an electronic menu offering a variety of lighting schemes, wall projections, and calming sounds. A mountain theme has a babbling brook with crickets chirping. Destinations such as Europe, Australia and South America are available. Children may select cartoon images or pictures of characters.

Putting the Patient in Control
Patients often feel a loss of control in a health care environment. This system is designed to empower patients to modify their surroundings, which restores that feeling of control.

"Claustrophobia is about a loss of control," said Steven Braff, M.D., physician leader and chairman of Radiology. "Now the patient can choose to control their environment."

A Relaxed Patient Equals a Better Scan
According to Dr. Braff these features not only help make the patient more comfortable, but because the patient is relaxed, it can also mean a better quality scan.

"Relaxing patients before the procedure is done is a big step to get patients comfortable. When people are comfortable they do not fidget, which means the images are going to come out clearer the first time. This will reduce the number of times we have to repeat the scans," Dr. Braff said.
