GOAL:The goal of the Pediatric
Radiology Division is to provide the highest quality imaging for children
in a child friendly and safe environment
STAFF: There is one full time and one part time pediatric
radiologist in the Division of Pediatric Radiology. Dr. Janice Gallant,
Division Director, has received extensive specialty training in Pediatric
Radiology at Children's Hospital in Boston. She is Board Certified in
General Radiology and has a Certificate of Added Qualification in Pediatric
Radiology. The Department of Radiology is fortunate to have many technologists
who have special interest, training and expertise in working with children.
HOURS OF OPERATION: Routine pediatric studies are performed
Monday through Friday 7:30 AM to 5:30 PM. Technologists and radiologists
are available after hours, on weekends and holidays to perform emergent
or urgent exams requested by a referring physician .
SERVICES COVERED: The Pediatric Radiology Service provides
imaging for children of all ages including plain film radiography, ultrasound,
CT, MRI, fluoroscopy and nuclear medicine. Pediatric film review sessions
occur daily between the pediatric radiologist and the pediatricians caring
for inpatients. While the pediatric radiologist is involved in many of
the studies performed on children, other subspecialists within then Department
of Radiology assist in the care of pediatric patients.
TYPES OF EXAMINATIONS: Typical examinations for children
include, but are not limited to the following: Fluoroscopy:
VCUG, upper and lower GI series- Ultrasound: abdominal
ultrasound, ultrasound of head and neck, pyloric and hip ultrasound- CT:
abdomen and pelvis, chest, head and bone- Nuclear medicine:
kidney function, skeletal- MRI: Body, chest, vascular
malformation.
RADIOLOGY NURSING: Nurses are available to provide care
for children having examinations performed in the Radiology Department.
In some cases, a patient will receive sedation administered by a Radiology
nurse who also monitors the patient before, during and after the exam.
SEDATION: Occasionally due to the age of a child and the
type of exam, (i.e. a child must remain very still for a long period of
time, an anticipated uncomfortable procedure), a child may need to be
sedated for an examination. The decision to sedate a patient is made by
both the referring doctor and the radiologist. Plans for sedation must
be made at the time the exam is scheduled.
SCHEDULING: Scheduling of pediatric patients is done through
Radiology Scheduling .Special patient needs such as sedation and/or special
exam preparations are arranged at that time.
PATIENT EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS: Special informational brochures
have been developed and are available to children and their families by
calling Jeannie Holmes, the Pediatric Educational Coordinator at 847-3593.
These materials can also be directly accessed on this web site.
QUESTIONS: Questions pertaining to the Pediatric Radiology
Service can be addressed to Dr. Janice Gallant at janice.gallant@vtmednet.org.
