CME Conferences

CME conferences are regularly scheduled conferences for which category 1 AMA credit is approved for local and remote attendees. Every department at Fletcher Allen offers grand rounds and telemedicine is available to most.  Additionally, special presentations by University of Vermont faculty to participating institutions, in person or via videoconferencing equipment, can be rewarded AMA Category 1 credits, if prior approval has been obtained. To receive credits the attendees must complete the CME evaluation form which includes a few questions regarding the videoconference evaluation. These forms are submitted to the site coordinator and returned to the CME office within six months.

If you are a physician and would like to view a CME presentation via telemedicine, please contact your site coordinator, and they will sign you up via the CME website.  You can also view all upcoming CME presentation information on the CME website located at http://cme.uvm.edu

If you are a site coordinator and would like to schedule participation for a physician please sign up using your account on the CME web site.  If you experience any problems using the sign up tool on the web, please contact us directly by email at telemedicine@vtmednet.org or by phone at
802-847-8266.  Questions regarding specific CME conferences or regional program requests can be directed to Mary Gagne

Videotaping Grand Rounds Presentations

Because of multiple requests to videotape various Grand Rounds presentations, we have explored ways by which we might meet those requests. In fact, we do not have the support or distribution within the telemedicine program to carry this out (in addition to the strong opinion that we should encourage interactive participation). Together with Fletcher Allen Health Care Communications and Public Affairs (Michael McKnight), we have developed the following policy:

A request for a videotape of particular grand rounds must be made at least a day prior to the event.  That request should go to email: Telemedicine@vtmednet.org or phone: 802-847-8266. We will be able to tape ONLY those programs that are live with another active site watching. AMA Category 1 credits are not available to physicians viewing presentations via videotape.  Media Services will duplicate and distribute the tape for a minimal charge: $15.00, including shipping and handling. Communications and Public Affairs will handle the billing.

We realize that this will not meet everyone's needs. We simply do not have the personnel or systems to tape every Grand Rounds presentation. We hope that this will at least offer a compromise situation to help. Questions about this policy should be directed to Michael McKnight.

Non-Credit Presentations

A non-credit presentation is one that does not qualify for CME credit.  Most of these conferences have been developed in response to particular requests of the telemedicine department.  For example, a remote site may wish to receive information regarding a particular health field from a Fletcher Allen physician.  The physician located at Fletcher Allen Health Care can request, from the telemedicine department, to relay this information via presentation by videoconference.

The surgery department continues to use telemedicine as a means of education for medical students, lawyers, physicians and sometimes the lay public.   Even when teaching directly from the operating room, the surgery department "broadcasts" its' weekly surgical grand rounds to a variety of community hospitals.  In addition, specialty conferences in otolaryngology, ophthalmology, vascular surgery, trauma surgery and neurosurgery have all utilized the telemedicine system for teaching conferences.

Resident Education

For residents doing rotations at remote sites, telemedicine can be a conduit to their educators and peers.  Rather than traveling back to the Fletcher Allen campus for an educational activity, we can potentially connect directly to you at your location.  To see if telemedicine is available at your location, please contact us by email Telemedicine@vtmednet.org or by phone 802-847-8266.
