The telemedicine department at Fletcher Allen Health Care offers support for administrative events such as meetings and staff interviews, as well as special events, such as annual conferences or awards ceremonies. The administrative aspect of telemedicine saves considerable time and cost associated with travel.  Covering special events or utilizing telemedicine for rare occurrences commonly are the most challenging yet rewarding experiences.

Meetings

Often, hospital employees will need to attend meetings out of town or simply across campus in a different building.  The telemedicine department has equipment located in several Fletcher Allen buildings both on-site and off-site to accommodate such persons not wanting to travel.  Through videoconferencing, time spent getting from one place to the next is saved, in turn, allowing for more valuable work time.

There is no longer the need to spend two days traveling to attend an all day conference or even a two hour conference.  Simply contact the telemedicine department and we can do the necessary work to get you connected to the conference via two-way interactive videoconferencing.

Employment Interviews

The ability to do interviews with our videoconferencing equipment has proven beneficial to both Fletcher Allen staff and the persons being interviewed.

Dr. David Clauss of the Emergency Department at Fletcher Allen states, "I have utilized the Telemedicine Service at Fletcher Allen many times to conduct personal interviews with physicians all around the country.  The quality of the connections and the service provided by the staff have been wonderful.  The availability of Telemedicine has saved countless hours and thousands of dollars in travel to physicians moving to Vermont."

Special Events

In December of 1998 Dr. Michael Ricci examined a patient via telemedicine from Vietnam.  The examination was part of the first telemedicine project between the United States and Vietnam.  The one hour demonstration also included live video of an open heart surgery, performed at Fletcher Allen, being viewed in Vietnam

The telemedicine department made it possible for a girl injured in a two-car crash to attend her high school graduation via interactive video in 1999.  Though unable to physically attend the graduation, she received her diploma from her hospital bed at Fletcher Allen, with her classmates located in Potsdam, NY, as family and friends looked on.
