About Us:

Welcome to the Division of Transplantation Surgery and Immunology. Transplantation is a relatively young field and thus is evolving at a tremendous rate. The spectacular success of organ transplantation over the last few decades has saved, lengthened, and immeasurably improved thousands of lives. Transplantation at Fletcher Allen goes back to the 1970s, when kidney transplantation was initiated. Today, there are numerous ways of receiving a kidney or pancreas, a development that further underscores the field's rapid evolution.

Currently, we provide the following variations of kidney transplantation: Cadaver donation, Living Related, Living Unrelated, Good Samaritan, High Risk/Highly Sensitized Protocols, Living Related/ Unrelated - Cadaver Exchange, and Pediatric Kidney Transplantation. We also offer Laparoscopic Donor Nephrectomy to living donors. Additionally, pancreas transplantation in any of the following combinations: Simultaneous Kidney-Pancreas, Pancreas after kidney and Pancreas alone are performed. These pancreas transplants are done for patients with Type 1 diabetes mellitus (and some type 2) who have secondary complications. A successful pancreas transplant means that the recipient's glucose remains normal without insulin injections. We are also currently developing a pancreatic islet cell and liver transplant program.

A major part of our clinical efforts are also dedicated to Liver Surgery. Our surgeons are trained in liver transplantation and liver surgery, and hence are very experienced at liver surgery.

The Division of Transplantation Surgery and Immunology is also very active in cutting edge research in Transplantation and Transplantation Immunology. Please click on "Research" for further details.
