Diabetic Foot Care

Many problems that occur in the feet of individuals that have diabetes can be prevented with simple precautions:

  1. Inspect your feet every day, top and bottom.
    You may need help.
    Look between the toes.
Look for cuts, blisters, sores, swelling, cracks, and/or redness.
  2. Always wear shoes that fit properly.
  3. Apply moisturizing lotion to dry skin.
  4. Never soak your feet or use a heating pad or hot water bottle on your feet.
  5. Cut your nails straight across and not too short
If you have problems with your vision, you may need help from a nurse or Podiatrist trained in foot care.
  6. No "bathroom surgery" with knives, razor blades, or scissors.
  7. Check inside your shoes before putting them on.
Wear clean, dry socks without seams or holes.
    Wash your feet daily.
Check the water temperature very carefully.
Dry your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.
  8. Never go barefoot.
    Don't wear pointy-toed shoes or "flip-flops".
  9. If problems arise, call your Doctor early.
