Welcome

woman with babyBirth is a momentous event.  Every person born into this world represents new possibilities and new hopes.  Not only a child but a new family is born, creating an indelible bond.

At Fletcher Allen Health Care, we consider it a privilege to participate in your childbirth experience and to share in the unfolding drama of life renewed.  We strive to provide your family with the kind of birth experience you choose to have, with the appropriate length of stay and environment for each woman and baby.

We offer all aspects of health and wellness care to women and their families, including a flexible and supportive environment which allows for a variety of childbirth alternatives.

We are dedicated to providing you, your baby and your family with the best possible care during your labor, delivery and recovery with us.

Dedication to Quality Care

Fletcher Allen has a long and rich history of providing a compassionate environment for childbirth.  We have been delivering babies since 1905.  Today, we deliver more than 2,000 babies every year.

We are proud of our record of service, which includes many distinctions:

  • We opened the first nurse midwifery program in the state of Vermont.  Thirty years later, the Claire M. Lintilhac Nurse-Midwifery Service is thriving, with a team of midwives offering prenatal, birthing and postpartum care.
  • We are a founding member of the Northern New England Perinatal Quality Improvement Network -- a group of hospitals in the Northern New England area dedicated to improving birth outcomes.
  • Our Fetal Diagnostic Center provides sophisticated prenatal screening and ultrasound evaluations in the northern New England region.
  • Despite an upward trend nationally in Cesarean births, our rate of C-sections remains below the national average.  In addition, we have a high rate of vaginal birth after previous Cesarean birth.
  • We have the only Level III NICU in the state of Vermont.  A Level III NICU is a special care nursery that offers one of the highest levels of intensive care for newborns.
  • The pioneering work of Fletcher Allen/University of Vermont College of Medicine neonatologist Jerold Lucey, M.D., has resulted in improved health for high-risk infants throughout the world.
  • We are a founding member and an active participant in the Vermont Oxford Network, an international group of more than 400 Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) focused on improving the quality, cost and safety of neonatal care.  The NICUs work together to improve quality of care and conduct research into new therapies.
  • Through our affiliation with the UVM College of Medicine and College of Nursing and Health Sciences, we participate in the latest research and developments in obstetrics and neonatology.
