What is the Maternal Fetal Medicine Service?
The Department of Obstetrics within Fletcher Allen Health Care's Medical Center Campus functions as a major regional referral center for obstetrical patients from a large part of Vermont and the northeast region of New York. The Maternal Fetal Medicine Service (MFMS) is a specialized section within the Department of Obstetrics which provides care for all types of complications of pregnancy including women who have serious illnesses. These illnesses may be either in association with, or as the result of pregnancy. We also care for pregnancies where there is a suspected or established fetal abnormality providing diagnostic, therapeutic and counseling services. The MFMS is staffed by 7 physicians who are Board certified in both Obstetrics and Gynecology as well as the subspecialty of Maternal and Fetal Medicine. The principal aim of the service is the early detection and treatment of complications of pregnancy in order to minimize any adverse maternal and fetal consequences of these complications. The division has an active fellowship program, training 3 fellows at any one time. This is where we actively train the Maternal Fetal Medicine specialists of the future.
