Welcome
What is a Certified Nurse-Midwife?
Nurse-midwives are individuals who are educated in the two disciplines of nursing and midwifery. Certified nurse-midwives possess licensure as Registered Nurses (RN) and
certification as Certified Nurse-midwives (CNM) after successful completion of a nurse-midwifery educational program. Nurse-midwives provide care for essentially normal women and newborns in the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum period. They may also provide family planning and well woman gynecological care.
Philosophy of Care
We believe that every woman and childbearing family has the right to safe, satisfying health care. We provide continuity of care and recognize each woman/family as unique and will act on their behalf. Our care includes health education, emotional support, and management of physical care for women throughout the childbearing years. We support each woman's right to active participation in her care, self-determination, and education about her health.
We believe that pregnancy is a natural process, and we support nonintervention in our management approach. We work in a team relationship with physicians and other health care professionals so that medical consultation or referral is always available. Education of other health professionals and clinical research are also aspects of our practice.
Midwifery History
The Claire M. Lintilhac Nurse-midwifery Service is a full-scope service employing 6 nurse-midwives. The Service honors the memory of Claire M. Lintilhac, a British trained nurse-midwife raised in China. In 1968 Mrs. Lintilhac worked with Dr. John Maeck of University Associates in Ob/Gyn at the University of Vermont to hire a nurse-midwife for the practice. More than thirty years later the nurse-midwife service has evolved into a program with three major areas of interest: clinical practice, education and research.
Clinically, the major goal of our service is to provide comprehensive maternity care which focuses on the needs of the family. Full-scope nurse-midwifery care is provided which includes prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, immediate newborn and routine gynecological care.
In addition to clinical responsibilities, the nurse-midwives are part-time faculty at the University of Vermont's College of Medicine, and act as preceptors for students from various Nurse-midwifery Educational Programs. As educators, the nurse-midwives are responsible for teaching the principles and skills involved in the process of the normal events of pregnancy, labor and delivery, postpartum and breastfeeding.
A research component within the Lintilhac Nurse-midwifery Service continues to thrive. For more information on nurse-midwifery research, click here.
