Training in Cardiovascular Disease

Training in cardiovascular disease is enhanced through the use of several modalities. A formal curriculum is distributed to each fellow upon matriculation. Independent reading is expected, and suggested reading is included in the curriculum. The cardiology library has copies of the major cardiovascular textbooks. Didactic teaching is available in a weekly lecture series. Cardiology fellows participate in didactic teaching through conferences such as morbidity and morality conference, subspecialty conferences (e.g. echocardiography, cardiac catheterization) and journal club. A substantial component of "hands on" training occurs during clinical rotations.

Weekly Lectures

Core Lectures

Daily at noon. Each summer (July and August) a basic curriculum is presented. The lectures are designed to introduce basic concepts in cardiology. The remainder of the year (September through May) is used for a curriculum that covers all major aspects of cardiology and prepares each fellow for board certification in cardiovascular disease. This curriculum is completed in two years.

Morbidity and Morality

Once each month, August through May. The two fellows rotating on the inpatient service during the preceding month each present selected cases. A brief discussion and literature review is provided.

SubSpecialty

Once each month, August through May. The fellows rotating on catheterization, echocardiography and nuclear review and discuss cases selected for specific educational purposes.

Journal Club

Weekly conferences in which fellows review recent articles.

ECG Conferences

Every other week, electrophysiologists review ECG tracings with fellows.

CCU Conferences

Once weekly, selected cases are discussed.

Fellow Didactic Conference

Each fellow presents one didactic conference each year.

Departmental Fellowship Lecture Series

This lecture series is designed to expose all fellows to concepts in molecular biology, immunology, metabolism, biostatistics, ethics, risk management, medical informatics, and physician wellness.
