Introduction

The University of Vermont offers three Internal Medicine training programs through its primary teaching hospital, Fletcher Allen Health Care; a three year Categorical Internal Medicine Program, a three year Primary Care Internal Medicine Program, and a one year Internal Medicine Preliminary Program. The academic medical center maintains a strong commitment to patient care and clinical training as well as to its continued development as a vital research center.

The Department of Medicine has 111 full-time faculty and 151 part-time faculty who participate in the clinical teaching programs at the Medical Center. The full-time faculty are organized into 11 subspecialty units, representing all of the major subspecialties of Internal Medicine and the division of General Internal Medicine.

The Department of Medicine has one of the largest extramural research programs in the university. It is home to the NIH-supported Clinical Research Center at Fletcher Allen Health Care, the NIH-funded Vermont Cancer Center, the Cardiovascular Research Institute, and the Vermont Lung Center. There are elective opportunities for trainees to become involved in ongoing research programs in the Department.
