Introduction

The University of Vermont College of Medicine at Fletcher Allen Health Care offers a two year fellowship training program in Nephrology that is approved by the American Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The Nephrology Fellowship has been in existence since 1972, and is designed to train physicians for careers in academic or clinical nephrology. Although the required fellowship program is two years in duration, fellows with a special interest in laboratory research are encouraged to stay on for additional years.

Curriculum

The fellowship follows a defined curriculum for two years. During the first year, the fellows rotate between the inpatient consultation service and the inpatient Nephrology/outpatient dialysis service. In addition, each fellow participates in a four to six month continuity block on the transplant service, following all inpatient and new outpatient renal transplants.

The transplant experience runs concurrent with the fellows' other responsibilities. All fellows participate in a general nephrology outpatient clinic (half day once a week) for the entire two years of the fellowship. Renal biopsies and temporary access procedures are performed by the fellows with attending supervision.

During the second year of the fellowship, the fellow is expected to undertake a major research project under the direction of one of our faculty members, preferably working in the basic science laboratory. The fellows continue their outpatient clinic experience and attend all the teaching conferences in the second year. In some instances, part of the second year is devoted to additional clinical experiences.

Fellows are expected to participate in teaching activities with residents and medical students during the two years of their training. Fellows are evaluated at the end of each rotation by the faculty, and meet regularly with the program director for feedback on their strengths and weaknesses.

Call Schedule

Fellows take call every fourth weekend. Coverage is always in association with an attending physician. During the first year, evening call during the week is divided among the fellows, but includes no more than two weeks per month. All call is taken at home.
