Inpatient Teaching Service Approximately 2,200 deliveries are performed each year at Fletcher Allen and approximately 1,200 gynecologic surgical procedures are performed annually. Fletcher Allen is the primary referral center for much of northern New England and northeastern New York State, as well as being the only community hospital providing obstetrical services in Chittenden County. Accordingly, many high-risk and unusual cases are admitted to the service from this large referral area. Referrals to maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, and reproductive endocrinology provide particularly challenging clinical experience. All community physicians are on staff as part-time faculty. These part-time faculty are actively involved in resident education. Residents will work with the part-time faculty in labor and delivery, the operating room, and the emergency room. In addition to general obstetrics and gynecology, all subspecialty areas in the discipline of obstetrics and gynecology are represented at the University of Vermont with nationally recognized faculty in the areas of maternal-fetal medicine, gynecologic oncology, endocrine/infertility, urogynecology and infectious disease. Supplemental to clinical training in these subspecialty fields, the Division of Reproductive Investigation is actively pursuing basic research in each area. Moreover, each of the full-time faculty maintains areas of special interest such as colposcopy, endoscopic surgery, adolescent gynecology, ultrasound, menopause, and urogynecology. The attending staff (including full-time and part-time) are committed to excellence in resident education. It is the goal of the faculty to provide a challenging and rewarding graduate education experience. For more information, visit our Women's Services website. |
