All orthopaedic residents are required to actively complete a basic clinical science research project during their residency program. Each resident has four months of designated research time. The topic for the research project should be decided during the second year and completed during the remaining three years of residency.

The Department of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation has complete laboratory facilities for all aspects of biomechanics, as well as small animal experimentation and histologic and biochemical techniques for the evaluation of both hard and soft tissues. Funded research programs are currently available in the areas of biomechanics of the spine, knee, shoulder, ankle, evaluation of scoliosis, and mechanisms of fracture healing. Research collaboration of both basic and clinical research problems is available in virtually all areas of orthopaedic interest from other departments as well.
