Program Description

The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a one-year ACGME accredited fellowship in cytopathology. The Medical Center Campus at Fletcher Allen Health Care is the primary site of fellowship training. The program provides extensive training in all areas of Cytopathology, including gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens, and incorporates the performance of fine needle aspirations. The Department utilizes developing techniologies within cytopathology, including thin layer, flow cytometric and immunocytochemical methodologies.

The Division of Cytopathology is also integrated into a multidisciplinary Breast Cancer Center, and sponsors a School of Cytotechnology. The fellow is expected to participate actively in clinical and didactic teaching activities involving medical students, residents, and clinical colleagues. There is also opportunity to participate in research projects. The Division of Cytopathology accessions over 62,000 gyn cytology cases and 4,500 non-gyn cytology cases a year, approximately 1,800 of which are fine needle aspiration biopsies.
