The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine offers a one-year fellowship in surgical pathology. The Medical Center Campus at Fletcher Allen Health Care is the primary site of fellowship training. The program is designed to provide a year of exposure to a broad variety of surgical pathology material with a focus on managing cases and communicating with clinicians while developing the confidence to tackle the day to day responsibility of a practicing surgical pathologist.

Most candidates typically start with a month of general surgical pathology so that they can familiarize themselves with routine operations and get to know the attending staff, pathologist assistants, residents, and support staff. The remainder of the year encompasses a core exposure of 4-6 months of hot seat responsibility. The remaining time can be divided between rotations in sub-specialty surgical pathology, an elective in cytology, a research project in our experimental pathology laboratory, or supervised non-resident bench sign out. The surgical pathology fellow also has an open invitation to attend the daily intradepartmental consultation conference where attending staff share their interesting cases and solicit diagnostic input from colleagues.
