Pathology Residency training at the University of Vermont is primarily an integrated Anatomic and Clincial Pathology program, although occasional residents select straight Anatomic or Clinical Pathology.

The residency program is designed first and foremost as an educational experience encompassing our traditional, tripartite mission of service, research, and teaching. Residents experience graded responsibility on clinical services, including active clinical decision making on clinical call for the hospital laboratories, and coverage of the surgical pathology "hot seat."

Our highly qualified and experienced clinical faculty are dedicated to the educational mission, as reflected by clinical rotations dominated by close, personal teaching and mentoring. Residents are actively engaged in teaching each other and medical students in both formal and informal formats. State of the art computer assisted teaching systems are available for residents to use and help develop.

The Department of Pathology has active, well funded research programs in Environmental Pathology, Cardiovascular Pathology, and Experimental Pathology, as well as NIH funded research training grants available in Enviromental Pathology and Hemostasis. Active participation in basic and
clinical research programs is encouraged and supported for all residents.

The Department ranks in the upper third of Pathology Departments nationally with respect to funded research, evidence of the high quality of faculty scholarship.

We believe these characteristics make residency training at the Unversity of Vermont Department of Pathology program an outstanding preparation for careers in academia, private practice, or industry.
