Six years, approved by the Council on Graduate Medical Education of the American Medical Association and the American Board of Neurological Surgery. A one-year straight surgical internship in an accredited North American program is required. Those applicants applying as fourth-year medical students should expect to serve their one year of general surgery at Fletcher Allen Health Care. There are six positions, one at each level. Appointments are made for one year. Advancement is predicated on satisfactory performance at each level. The first year is spent in clinical Neurosurgery at Fletcher Allen Health Care, the University of Vermont's teaching hospital. The following 12 months are spent in basic research. The third year consists of a 6-month rotation as Senior Resident at Fletcher Allen, and 3 months each of Neurology and Neuropathology. The fourth year is spent at Maine Medical Center in Portland, Maine as a Senior neurosurgery resident. The fifth year consists of a 6-month rotation as Senior resident-neurosurgery at Fletcher Allen, and 6 months of Spine Service. The final 12 months are served as Chief resident at Fletcher Allen.
