Research and Scholarly Activity
A year of basic science research is performed following completion of two years of clinical training. This can be performed at the University of Vermont or at a laboratory at another institution if extramural funding is available. Residents are free from all clinical responsibilities during this year. Attendance at local meetings and at departmental CME courses is strongly encouraged. Residents who have had abstracts accepted at national meetings may attend that meeting at departmental expense. Research conferences at the departmental level are generally held weekly.
In addition to the Dana Medical Library, the department maintains a library within Fletcher Allen for use by the house staff. This library is equipped with a slide projector, VCR, monitor and a terminal to the hospital computer. An additional resident library is located on the general surgery inpatient unit.
The residents are encouraged to develop their responsibilities as teachers. The residents are responsible for teaching junior residents and medical students during daily hospital activities and are expected to present conferences at the team level. Residents are also expected to present at the weekly quality assurance meetings and the chief residents are expected to give at least one Grand Rounds per year. Residents at the research fellowship year and above are awarded faculty appointments.
