Contents:

All Resident Programs at Fletcher Allen Health care must participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP).  Most Residency applications are submitted via Electronic Residency Application Service.  

Please see individual programs for additional requirements and/or Fellowship applications.

Materials required from all applicants are:

  • Application
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Personal Statement
  • Dean's Letter
  • Transcripts
  • A minimum of three (3) recent letters of reference from direct supervisors
  • Successful completion of both Steps 1 and 2 of either the United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) or Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination (COMLEX)

International applicants must :

  • have a J-1 Visa or have a U.S. citizen Permanent Resident status. No other Visas will be accepted. (H1B are not acceptable.) 
  • have graduated from medical school within the last two years
  • have a current certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG)
  • successfully completed the Clinical Skills requirement
  • have worked in clinical medicine in the United States within the last two years
    NOTE:  an observership does not fulfill this requirement

Policy on Resident Eligibility and Selection - Fletcher Allen Health Care - Overview

The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education requires that the Institution
have written policies and procedures for the recruitment and appointment of residents.
In addition, the Institution must monitor the compliance of each program with these
procedures.

Criteria for Resident Eligibility

Applicants with one or more of the following qualifications are eligible for appointment:

  1. Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by
    the Liaison Committee on Medical Education
  2. Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States accredited
    by the American Osteopathic Association
  3. Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet
    the following qualifications:

    (1) Have received a currently valid certificate from the Educational Commission
         for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

    (2) Have passed the Clinical Skills Assessment Exam (CSA) offered by ECFMG
         and hold a valid CSA certificate.

(3) Have, by the time of employment, a full and unrestricted license to practice
     medicine in Vermont.

     d.   Graduates of medical schools outside the United States who have completed a
          "fifth pathway" program provided by an LCME-accredited medical school.

Criteria for Resident Selection (revised 4/08)

  1. Programs should select from among eligible applicants on the basis of their
    preparedness, ability, aptitude, academic credentials, communication skills,
    and personal qualities such as motivation and integrity.
  2. Programs must not discriminate with regard to sex, race, age, religion, color,
    national origin, disability or veteran status.
  3. MD applicants entering a residency training program at FAHC must have passed Step 1 & 2 of USMLE.
  4. DO applicants entering a residency training program at FAHC must have passed Step 1 & 2 of COMLEX.
  5. House staff shall not be re-appointed if he or she has not passed USMLE Step 3 (MDs) or COMLEX Part 3 (DOs) and be eligible for a full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in Vermont by March 1 or their PGY-2 year.
  6. All physicians entering a fellowship training program at Fletcher Allen must
    be Board-Eligible in their specialty and have passed the necessary examinations
    for full licensure.
  7. All applicants, who are Board-Eligible and have been practicing medicine,
    entering a training program, must fully complete the credentialling process.

          Please note, specific residency programs may require DO applicants to have passed Steps 1 and 2 of USMLE.  DO applicants should contact the Fletcher Allen Health Care Graduate Medical Education Department for further information.
