Overview
Laboratory Support Services (LSS), Central Receiving at FAHC has 30 employees, some are cross-trained in phlebotomy. The Laboratory Central Receiving area of LSS has two receiving lead technologists and two charge technologists. The receiving area of the lab receives over 1000 specimens daily and handles samples from in-house patients, outpatients, and from external clients. Samples come from all of Vermont, Eastern New York, and Western New Hampshire. The samples are unpacked, accessioned, labeled, spun and aliquotted if needed and then are delivered to other areas of the lab for processing and testing. Samples are sent for special testing to external labs such as Mayo Medical Laboratories in Minnesota, Boston University, Pittsburgh University, Genzyme in Massachusetts, and the Blood Center of Wisconsin. The night staff is also responsible for generating and sending patient reports to our various clients.
Highlights
- Pneumatic tube sends STAT samples rapidly from 10 Inpatient stations to the Lab.
- Processing whole blood samples into portions for testing involves many variables - light conditions, variable storage temperatures, variety of tubes, centrifuge spins and volume requirements.
- Planning new robotics technology for the new Ambulatory Care Center Building (could save up to 10 miles/day of sneaker tread!)
- Did you know we also test samples from veterinary offices?
