Overview

The Clinical Chemistry Division at Fletcher Allen is a large, complex laboratory which offers over 130 separate assays; over 1 million results per year on main analyzers alone. The staff is comprised of over 30 medical technologists, two technical assistants, three team leaders, a chief technologist, and a pathologist. The laboratory is open 24 hours a day with the evening and night shifts performing mostly automated testing (i.e. general chemistries, TDM and immunoassays). The Chemistry laboratory also actively participates in resident, medical student and medical technologist education.

The Chemistry laboratory performs a wide range of testing, including general chemistry, endocrine testing, tumor markers, therapeutic drug monitoring, limited toxicology, lead testing, hepatitis testing, protein electrophoresis and immunofixation, hemoglobin electrophoresis, special chemistry and urinalysis.
