Overview
The Laboratory Compliance Specialists are responsible for ensuring that the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine is compliant with the laws and governing regulations promulgated by all appropriate federal and state regulating agencies.
One of the primary areas of focus is to ensure compliance with the Office of Inspector General's Guidelines for Clinical Laboratories. These guidelines outline the federal government's expectations for clinical laboratories when they participate in the Medicare program. Some of the topics addressed in these guidelines include Reflex Testing, Standing Orders, Medicare Coverage Limitations (example: National Coverage Decisions) for laboratory testing, and Advance Beneficiary Notices.
For more information on the Office of Inspector General's Guidelines, go to the HHS Office of Inspector General web site. Laboratory Guidelines published 8/1998.
For more information on these topics please refer to the Laboratory Services Directory. To view this Directory on-line, go to the Laboratory Services area of this web site. Specific information on Medicare coverage limitations can be obtained by contacting the Laboratory Compliance Specialist or you can access directly from CMS at http://www.cms.hhs.gov/manuals/pm_trans/R136CIM.pdf
