Overview

The Division of Hematology is staffed by 20.19 FTE technical and clerical staff, plus 2.3 FTE Attending Pathologists, and one to two (1-2) Resident Pathologists. A Fellow in Hematopathology and/or Coagulation may also be on staff. The supervisory staff is included in the total complement of technical personnel.

The main Hematology Laboratory is located at the MCHV Campus, with satellite facilities located at the Fanny Allen campus and in the Hematology Oncology clinic at the UHC campus. Routine hematology testing is done at all sites (Hemagrams and differentials, Protimes and PTT's, sed rates, and differentials). Special coagulation and special hematology testing is performed at the MCHV site only. Special Coagulation testing includes Factor assays, Thrombosis studies, heparin assays, platelet function and lupus anticoagulant testing and von Willebrand testing. For more information about Coagulation testing, visit the Specimen Handling section of the Laboratory Services Directory in the Services Provided area of the web site.

Special Hematology testing includes Kleihauer-Betke tests, Semen Analyses, Body Fluid analysis, Bone Marrow processing, Osmotic Fragility tests, Leukocyte Alkaline Phosphatase, Sickle Cell testing, Sugar Water Test and Sperm screens.

The annual output of Hematology tests is approximately 315,000 billed tests. The services provided include basic quantitative hematology testing, advanced coagulation tests for diagnosis and treatment and Bone Marrow diagnosis and consultation services. There is an active Residency Program in these disciplines (for more information about the Residency Program, visit the Education and Training area of this web site). Approximately 45-50% of the annual workload consists of out-patient specimens which are either obtained on-site or delivered by courier from hospitals throughout Vermont and physicians offices from a surrounding area of about 75 miles.
