Vision
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine supports the goals and common vision of Fletcher Allen Health Care and the University of Vermont College of Medicine. This vision reflects our commitment to excellence in:
- serving the region
- patient care
- resident, medical student and allied health care teaching
- clinical and basic research.
In fulfilling this vision, we seek to create and maintain an environment that respects individuals, accepts change as a basic premise, values teamwork, and demands a commitment to academic excellence. The members of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will provide high quality integrated patient care, research and education. We will work with departmental, institutional and regional programs to achieve these goals while maximizing their value. Our vision is comprised of the following areas:
Service: The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will be a regional resource for laboratory diagnosis and treatment of human disease. We will provide complete, state of the art diagnostic, consultative and therapeutic services, and work with local and regional providers to establish cost effective programs for delivery of high quality laboratory services to the region.
Research: The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will excel in clinical and basic disease related research. Clinical research will be aligned with the goals of the clinical enterprise and actively engage our clinical faculty. Basic research will be focused in two areas: environmental pathology and cardiovascular disease. Collaboration of our clinical and basic research efforts will be maximized. Residents and medical students will be actively recruited into our research programs.
Education: The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine will provide an excellent education for our traditional constituencies of undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students. In addition, we will be a major educational resource to the health care professionals in the region and nation. Our educational efforts will focus on the development of critical thinkers with strong problem solving skills.
Informatics: Our vision is to utilize information systems technology to automate the collection, generation and dissemination of pathology related clinical, anatomical, business and educational data. We envision a network where data would flow from wherever it originates, through our systems which would then integrate with Fletcher Allen care management systems. Our systems would then organize the data into information that would be of great benefit to individuals and organizations. These technologies will improve patient care, create new business opportunities, strengthen customer service, enhance our research efforts and fundamentally change the way we educate students.
